Well, the beauty of Veeam is that during the backup process, a catalogue of backup files is created detailing where the backup blocks reside. You may be wondering about restores and the potential costs of recovering from a cold storage tier.

If your organisation is currently using public cloud as a capacity tier within your Scale Out Backup Repository, Veeam v11 introduces compatibility with AWS Glacier and Azure Archive to further reduce public cloud costs.Īs always with Veeam, they have made it simple to use with automated tiering of data to cold storage to reduce those public cloud storage costs. AWS Glacier and Azure Archive - cost saving with backups Implementing immutability in this way can help you to move away from legacy tape backups and, ultimately, speed up backup and recovery times without relying on public cloud providers for immutability. Once the period of immutability has elapsed, the files can be deleted when the ‘i’ flag is removed. Veeam uses the ‘i’ attribute set on each file within Ubuntu to prevent them from being changed or deleted.
This can be done on a physical Veeam repository server running Ubuntu version 18 or later. With Veeam’s v11 comes the ability to deploy a hardened backup repository on-premises to store backups immutably.
Previous immutable options relied on either:

In v11, Veeam have focussed on backup immutability and how to improve it. With a bit of reconfiguration and deployment of these required components at both the source and destination sites, VMs can be replicated using a CDP policy with an RPO of seconds. The CDP feature uses the vSphere APIs for IO Filtering (VAIO), additional Veeam CDP proxies and a schedule to define the required RPO.
Veeam customers can leverage their existing investment in Veeam to create a disaster recovery (DR) strategy for all aspects of their virtual environment, without the need for a second replication product to achieve that near zero RPO! With the introduction of CDP, Veeam now provides the ability to continuously protect virtual machines (VMs) with a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of seconds, rather than the minutes we have been used until now. Veeam have enhanced their replication capabilities in v11 with CDP, probably one of the most exciting features in this new release. The latest version of Veeam Backup and Replication, v11, is nearly here and brings over 100 new features and enhancements! One of our Veeam specialists got a sneak preview and has provided his thoughts on the best new features in Veeam v11 and how they can benefit new and existing customers.
